To advance space science education and research in Nigeria and Africa by providing high-quality postgraduate training and fostering innovation in space science and engineering.

Our Vision

To become a leading center of excellence in space science and engineering education, research, and innovation in Africa.

Our History

From a national space policy to a postgraduate institute

1999

NASRDA is founded

The Federal Government establishes the National Space Research and Development Agency to pursue space science and technology for national development.

2010

The NASRDA Act is signed into law

On 27 August 2010 the Act gives the Agency its statutory footing and empowers the Space Council as the regulatory authority for space activities in Nigeria. It is under this Act that the Institute is later created.

2015

The Institute is established

On 2 June 2015 NASRDA establishes the Institute of Space Science & Engineering at the Obasanjo Space Centre in Abuja, to address the shortage of advanced space science skills in Nigeria and across Africa.

2018

NUC approval and the AUST affiliation

The Nigerian Universities Commission approves the Institute's postgraduate programmes and ISSE becomes an affiliate of the African University of Science and Technology, through which its M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees are awarded.

Today

Four programmes, a growing body of graduates

ISSE runs M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Space Physics, Geoinformatics and GIS, Aerospace Engineering and Systems Engineering, and its graduates work across research, industry and the academy.
